Halloween Safety Tips
-
Purchase only costumes, wigs and props labeled flame-resistant or
flame-retardant. Avoid billowing or long trailing features.
-
Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat
bags for greater visibility.
-
Keep highly flammable decorations well away from all open flames and heat
sources, including light bulbs, heaters, etc. Use extreme caution when
decorating with candles, and supervise children at all times when candles
are lit. Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from all combustible items.
-
Remember to keep exits clear, ensuring decorations do not block escape
routes.
-
Use flashlights and/or chemical light sticks as alternatives to candles when
decorating pumpkins, walkways and/or yards.
-
Instruct children to stay away from open flames. Review with your children
how to stop, drop and roll in the event their clothing catches fire.
-
Instruct children who are attending parties to locate the exits and plan how
they would get out in an emergency.
-
Provide children with lightweight flashlights to carry for lighting.
-
Follow the rules of the road. When crossing the street, stop at the curb and
look both ways for moving cars before crossing.
-
Accompany your children while trick-or-treating.
-
Instruct children that are old enough to trick-or-treat alone, to stay with
a friend at all times and avoid unlit homes and strangers.
-
Lastly, warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully
examined them for evidence of tampering.
Make Halloween a fun, safe and a happy time for you and your children!
